Kansas

Welcome to Kansas - known for The Wizard of Oz, twisters, and wheat.

My absolute favorite ice cream came from Topeka, Kansas - Brown Bread Ice Cream from G's Frozen Custard. Imagine Outback's brown bread but as an ice cream. It is delightful.

Fun facts:

  • Alcohol was prohibited in Kansas for 67 years. Kansas was on the forefront of the prohibition movement to outlaw alcohol. In 1881 (39 years prior to the nationwide prohibition), the production, transportation and sale of alcohol went into place. This law was strictly enforced until it was removed in 1948 (15 years after the nationwide prohibition).
  • Kansas is really flatter than a pancake. Scientists, yes scientists, compared the topography of Kansas to that of a pancake from IHOP and determined that is was in fact flatter than a pancake.
  • The ICEE was invented in Kansas. In 1958, the owner of a Dairy Queen had his ice cream machine brake down. While it was under repair he quickly thought of an idea to still make sales. He stored bottles of soda in a freezer and sold them before they froze solid. It was so successful that he partnered with a manufacturer to make a machine and patent the drink.
