Fun facts:
- The largest and most expensive telegram ever sent was the Constitution of Nevada. It was sent to congress in 1864 to make Nevada officially a state. The telegram took 12 hours straight to send the 175 page document via telegram through morse code. And since there is no direct line from Nevada to Washington DC, the telegram had to be tapped out in of the way station cities Nevada to Salt Lake City to Chicago to Philadelphia before finally landing in DC. At the end of the day, this telegram cost about $60,000 in today’s dollars. This telegram ultimately made Nevada a state, helped Lincoln win a second term (three electoral votes came with statehood), and helped end the Civil War.
- The gambling mecca state once banned gambling for 21 years. From 1910 to 1931 it was illegal to gamble in the state. Once the ban was lifted, it corresponded with heavier bans on gambling in the surrounding states which brought more people to the area along with infrastructure projects that brought in new people. Las Vegas organically grew to having hotels and performers. And by the 1950s Las Vegas was in it’s prime.
- Las Vegas has the most hotel rooms in one city. There are over 150,000 hotel rooms spread throughout this city. A single person would not even be able to stay in a fraction of those rooms in their lifetime. (Don’t look up how many days the average person lives in their lifetime, like I did. It’s a bit depressing).
