Georgia
Welcome to Georgia - known for their peaches, peanuts and being quintessentially southern.
My favorite thing I've seen in Georgia is the Jimmy Carter peanut. The peanut was used in his campaign and sports nothing but his smile. It resides in Plains, Georgia (his hometown) and is nothing short of delightful. I will have an article based soley on this peanut. Stay tuned!
Fun facts:
- Coca-Cola was invented in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1885, Dr. John Pemberton invented a drink and called it “Pemberton’s French Wine Coca Nerve Tonic” and used it to help kick a morphine addiction. The original recipe contained alcohol but when the prohibition was passed in various parts of Georgia, he developed the non-alcoholic version and called it Coca-Cola.
- Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon” was created by poor farming practices in the 1800s. If you visit today, you’ll be met with views of canons sporting beautiful multicolored soils. This canyon began forming in the 1800s. The native forest had been cleared in the area for cotton farming and no land-preserving techniques were put in place leading to massive erosion.
- Waffle House was founded in Georgia! Waffle house is a diner style restaurant that operates on a 24 hour basis. In 1955, Joe Rogers and Tom Forkner opened up the joint. Today, over 1,900 locations are spread across 25 states. Bonus fact: in the 1960s, Waffle House used to sell Chick-fil-a chicken sandwiches. The owner of a local diner contracted with Waffle house to sell his proprietary chicken sandwich but the sandwich began outselling the waffle house menu so Waffle House ended the deal. This inspired the owner of the diner to create a spin off chain called Chick-fil-a. So before you get too boujee with your chicken sandwich remember your roots.
