World’s Largest Cherry Pie

The record holder for the World’s Largest Cherry Pie goes to the town of Oliver, British Columbia, Canada. Though there’s a whole lot of drama around World’s Largest Cherry Pies, but the town of Oliver, Canada are the ultimate winners.

In 1992, the local rotary club of Oliver wanted to bake a pie larger than life, so big that it would seem impossible to beat.

The man in charge had only a dream and a recipe for a 9 inch cherry pie. He then went to the local high school and sought out the math teacher. He gave her what I imagine all math teachers dream about, a word problem.

Oliver has a 9 inch pie recipe and he needs to make a 20 foot diameter pie using the same ratios. What is the total amount of each ingredients he needs to scale it up?

Well she went right to work and came up with the following for the pastry dough alone:

  • 276 eggs
  • 1120 cups of flower
  • 1408 cups of lard.

Then for the filling they used:

  • 64,000 cups of cherries
  • 112,000 tablespoons of sugar

Why they measured it in tablespoons instead of cups, I’ll never know. Maybe it just sounds better.

The filling was loaded into 98 – 45 gallon drums, transferred by truck and then fork-lifted into the pan. They wound up only using 96, due to two of the barrels beginning to ferment and of course they didn’t want to ruin the pie.

They choose a lattice crust for their pie so the volunteers rolled dough all night and had to use 2×4’s to transfer the strips onto the pie.

After it was all said and done, they shared their creation with the community. The whole production was ran through donations and volunteers. Making large memories that will last a life time.

The grand total for the massive pie creation weighed in at 39,638 pounds with a 20 foot diameter. As of 2026, they still hold the record today, which is 36 years of holding the record down.

All photos came from a “BC was Awesome” TV show for a 5 minute segment. So make sure to check out the video! Outside this video, finding photos was a challenge. But I think there story is one that needs to be shared with the masses.
